I don't John Kearns is on a pay-per-view deal with Now TV/Sky so he's had his money.

Well we don't know what deal he's on, but viewing figures will definitely influence whether he will get another special or not, and will also influence whether Sky will pay for other 'critically acclaimed, but not household names' to make specials. Seems a shame to jeopardise that to save a couple of quid, and surprising to see on a forum full of comedy fans.

Quote from: C_Larence on September 03, 2024, 04:36:24 PMPlease don't DM this to me. I think he's funny enough, but I'm not a huge fan of stand up as a form and I don't want to waste the spare time I have watching it.

Someone DMed it to me...

I don't live in the UK, no way to get Sky here.

Sarnie Rudeboy

It's a shame they have made it so difficult to watch.

No one is strolling up to the Sky stand in the shopping centre and subbing a 24 month contract because the new John Kearns special is on for a month.

It will take them longer than that to send you a new router.

Snrub

Just get Now TV for one month, it's not that difficult. Totally understand if you don't want to, but it's no harder than anything else on streaming. Presumably that is more likely to happen than someone going to buy a Sky box since it's the model the whole TV industry seems to be built on now

Anyway in the absence of any actual commentary on the show, I watched this last night - having seen it twice live. Would recommend, still plenty of laughs having seen it twice before. Thought John might have been slightly nervous at the start with it being filmed and his usual energy seemed off but that soon disappeared

I thought this too.  Maybe the fact he needed to use an instrumental at the beginning instead of using Bette Midler doing 'Gotta Have A Gimmick' like every other tour show.

Not to play devil's advocate, but were I to join others who have asked not to be sent a DM, it might be for the purpose of watching it once it lapses from streaming, rather than watching it now instead of where it has been licensed. It's more likely to do the rounds and be saveable than once it's not actually possible to watch/be ripped at all by the public.

Don't DM.(?)

locking my DMs in case anyone tries to make me commit a crime owing my poor impulse control

CaledonianGonzo

Is there even a snaffled copy available, or is this just people asking into the void?

sevendaughters

watched 20 minutes of this, entirely legally, was gifted a subscription to Now by James Murdoch, anyway, I really like John Kearns, seen him live three times, watched every vid of him online, but this, idk, this wasn't particularly funny? beginning to comment on his own shtick as if the limelight has exposed that the character "John Kearns" isn't really a mainstream proposition but his post-Taskmaster fame demands one, I dunno, started to feel weird about his work, almost embarrassed while watching it.

BeardFaceMan

I've only seen him on Cats Does Countdown and Taskmaster, does he do a whole show with those teeth and wig?

all the shows I have seen of him he has been in both but there is earlier footage of him without and in this one he occasionally takes them off. maybe this is part of a whole story but i was struggling to get through it. one of the other comedy experts on this forum will be along shortly to progress your query.

Yeah basically.

When he did this one live, he certainly made more of a thing that "look this absolutely is not what you saw on TV" (although there is still a lot of that in there). On the early leg of the tour he was literally answering questions about Taskmaster for about ten minutes in the show I saw.

I do wonder if the line between on stage John and off stage John has always been quite thin but obviously the wig makes a difference.

He's certainly got more thoughtful as his shows have gone on - I think I've seen them all and this show even more so. I'll be interested to see where he goes next. Think I mentioned - probably in the stand up thread if not this one - I saw Varnishing Days for the second time at The Lowry a couple of months back for what was the final show of the tour and at the end he said a few words and I got the vibe he'd enjoyed the tour but he was very much done with it (as in this show) as his life had moved on, and his kid must be older than one now. Maybe that comes across a bit in this recording, think this was at the arse end of the tour as well.

I'd also be crying myself to sleep if someone DM'd me

I would not like to be sent this thanks.

Edit: Oh right, there is no discussion, the whole thread is just people asking for links.  Great.

Came to this as a dirty Taskmaster casual and slinked away thus. The voice and delivery just triggered misophonic revulsion. The material was great and there were some lovely moments but they were buried in the nails-on-chalkboard suffering.

Poobum

Uh?!

I just couldn't get on with the gimmick and delivery, I pretty much hated it. It was just the way he emphasized things and volume changes that wound me up. There kept being the odd moment that I absolutely loved so I kept sticking with it. Glad I tried it, but not for me.

3 poos out of bum

Twilkes

I spent nine pounds and ninety nine pence on one month of NowTV so supporting Mr Kearns' viewing figures and gaining access to literally hours of superb extra-televisual viewing, which I shall proceed to DM into your inboxes sideways you modern day Dickin Turpinhoods.

Thought it was great, got on well with the delivery, think it enhanced it although I'd love to know how/why it came about back in 2011 as his Chortle Student videos didn't have it and he seemed to be doing okay.

Showerdad.
