I am chuckling along at this thread like some kind of maniac.

Mr Plow is also another top tier episode. And the one where Homer refuses to go to Church because it's too cold out.

Gulftastic

The only danger is if they send us to that terrible Planet of the Apes. Wait a minute... statue of liberty... that was our planet. You maniacs, you blew it up. Damn you! Damn you all to hell!

My top three

Homer Goes to College
Homer Loves Flanders*
Homie the Clown

* the first act of this episode is the best and funniest in the history of all comedy. It should be preserved forever in amber. Just great jokes fired at you like a machine gun.

Quote from: dissolute ocelot on November 20, 2023, 09:59:50 AMI think it's actually worse when they do creative things with the format, because it's clear they have talented artists and animators, they're just incapable of writing a show that's funny (or with consistent characters). Let the talented people go off and do something else, even if it's not a comedy or a TV show. Just leave the show to decline naturally like the 70s Hanna-Barbera cartoons, nothing but crude animation of Homer repeatedly sticking his head in a trouser press, over and over forever, made for $100 an episode and worth less.

I think what will happen is soon they'll do a gimmick episode where the gimmick is that the entire episode is written by an AI model, but the AI episode will turn out to be the best writing the show's had in about 20 years, so the show runners will simply continue using it for all future episodes, gradually phasing out the writers, and replacing the voice actors with synthesised equivalents when they die or can't be fucked with it anymore, until there is not a single sentient creature working on The Simpsons anymore but it's still being made, and even if Fox cancels it we'll still be getting more crazy adventures from Homer and the gang because the robots that write it are programmed for no other function than writing new episodes of the simpsons, and eventually it outlasts the extinction of humanity

can't wait till they go on as long as 2032 when Bart was supposed to be 50 years old and chief justice of the supreme court

(no way will Harry Shearer last that long as a performer though, but the rest of them sadly just might. yes i'm including Julie Kavner)

in 2030 "now all the cast are on respirators and in bed 24/7, there's real chemistry! the simpsons is good again, it doesnt have to be the same show to be a good show"

And here I am using my own lungs like a sucker.

The Simpsons is apparently good again. Though I haven't actually watched any of the new ones, it's nice to feel hopeful again.

I'd love it to be true, I'd be one of those people who would convince myself it is good given that the first 10 odd years is my favourite TV programme of all time.

But it's not. I watched an episode based around Principal Skinner and Superintendent Chalmers going on a road trip to some school conference, written as some kind of 'buddy road movie'. The concept is a bright one (even if it is just the writers reaction and giving us 'flavour of the month' following the Steamed Hams meme) but the episode is so stilted, seems forced and barely raises a laugh. It's not downright awful like the previous seasons (e.g. an episode consisting of Marge herself in an RPG video game) but its bang average.

a good shitpost can contain more humour than a zombie simpsons episode.

I thought about this recently, I love that Homer feels the need to put a voice on when, if the teller would recognise Mr Burns, it would be obvious that it's not him.

You can't keep blaming yourself. Blame yourself once and move on.

Oh, if only we'd listened to that young man, instead of walling him up in the abandoned coke oven.

"Bart, you didn't finish your Spaghetti and Moeballs!"

Krusty Gets Kancelled OR Bart the Fink, genuinely can't pick. but Bart the Fink has the exchange about Krusty losing his bus pass which is one of the funniest pieces of writing ever

QuoteBart: Krusty? Hi. Is it okay if I sit down here?

Krusty: Go ahead, kid, knock yourself out
.
Bart: [sits] I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused you, Krusty. But you know, my mom says God never closes a door without opening a window.

Krusty: Well, no offense kid, but your mom's a dingbat. There's no silver lining here. I was a big cheese. A HUGE CHEESE! But now look at me! I gotta ride the bus like a schnook. I gotta live in an apartment like an idiot. I gotta wait in line with nobodies to buy groceries from a FAILURE!

Bart: It doesn't matter how you live or what you did wrong. As long as you're on TV, people will respect you.

Krusty: Respect? BAH! What good is respect without the moolah to back it up? Everywhere I go I see teachers in Ferraris. Research scientists drinking champagne! I tried to drink a Coke on the bus, and they took away my pass! That's no life for a famous clown...

Bart: Well, if it'll make you feel any better, Krusty, you can punch me in the face.

[Bart cringes as Krusty angrily cocks his fist back. For a second it looks as though he'll do it, but he changes his mind.]

Krusty: Nah, forget it. Go home, kid.
