yeah but they're still boring and annoying and should die, slowly and painfully, on-screen

Agent Dunham

Quote from: Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse on July 31, 2024, 09:40:33 AMNo, Futurama, what you do is you write an episode where something dumb and inconsequential gets hyped as an instant get rich quick scheme and everyone loses their minds buying into it, then it turns out it was all a scam by hustlers and rich people. You never say the word NFT. This is supposed to be the future.

Not patronising enough toward the audience.

What if they called them NFTs but it stood for Neat Futuristic Things or something? That'd go down a treat in a Radio 4 comedy set in the future.

madhair60

cubert farnsworth's cunty little voice saying "it's an NFT???" sarcastically, and they expect you to actually like and want to see this

just fuck off, Futurama

fuck. off

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

NFTs have died a death, who'd remember them 1000 years from now??? Cryptocurrency, maybe. We know about the tulip craze because it precipitated a major economic disaster. NFTs? No.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

Like I know there are certain things we accept about Futurama's setting, like that they speak English and it's largely unchanged from the language we speak now. But come on writers ffs. Before you write about some 21st century reference please ask yourselves,"is this the kind of thing people would learn about in school 1000 years from now?"

Agent Dunham

I remember Groening early on saying that science fiction is always about the era it's written in, in some way, but in that case we need an episode about 1000 year old NFTs causing some... etc. It would have probably made a single good gag in an otherwise unrelated episode.

Alberon

Even if it does take four years to write, record and animate an episode it's still a big mistake to open the season with it.

Mind you, they felt they had to explain what an NFT was so they didn't even have any faith in their own story.

Yeah, that tends to be true in that writers often extrapolate from something happening currently and imagine how it might develop, not just putting the Hwak Tuah girl in the future or something.

One of the more jarring episodes of the Hulu reboot did actually have multiple of his children die on screen. Better than that - it was played for chuckles!

What a dog shit this thing has become.

I don't have Hulu so googled this and I don't object to this in principle - Kif's people are amphibians and spawn several young at a time because they're preyed upon. I dunno, I feel like that's actually a nice bit of world-building, even if it's horrifying. What's dumb is those kids are 20 years older but Cubert and Dwight are still teenagers. Unless in the future, humanity has found a way to slow the ageing process. ...Which is also horrifying when you remember what being a teenager was like.

Ferris

It's tonally jarring, or that's how I found it anyway. As for whether it's funny or not... it isn't, and certainly not funny enough to justify the weird gear shift.

In a list of latter-day futurama's crimes this won't even rate, but it was the thing that I remember of the reboot. It's also the thing that made me turn off.

These things are all subjective though so I'm not the gospel on any of this.

Hulu isn't available in the UK. All the futurama eps past and present are on disney+ for us.

dissolute ocelot

I saw an advert for this on UK Disney+ yesterday. I watched Reservation Dogs instead.

Ah right. I can't really justify yet another streaming service given I barely watch anything other than YouTube now.

RetroRobot

Like that just like the simpsons there's twice as much bad futurama as there is good ones, at least matts consistent

Wait no hang on that game of thrones but simpsons one was completely shit nevermind

Two outta three being good for a bit and then fucking horrible ain't bad as meated loaf used to say

I still hold a candle for *some* of the comedy central ones but I doubt this awful, awful season isn't going to be the end of it.

Agent Dunham

There wasn't a glimmer in the first season of this incarnation, either. I was hoping for a rethink during the interim; Groening making the suggestion that it could be "better".

idunnosomename

does Groening have any more input on this these days than the Simpsons? or even watch the new episodes?

I think Groening did a lot of initial co-development and story-building with David X. Cohen and some character designs (Cohen isnt a cartoonist at all, there's a good anecdote the only character he ever designed is a gag pole-dancing robot with a planetary gear hip), working with a lot of artists like Bill Morrison (long-term Bongo Comics colleague). but Cohen is the long-term showrunner of it since it started being produced. He wrote one S8 episode but I thought they were all as bad as each other whether they used long-term staff or a new writer. they're just bored with it and forced to make them because streaming is desperate for recognisable new content

BritishHobo

Oh christ

How have they developed this knack for picking such terrible, dated subjects? This one is particularly bad because if they'd put it out in six months time it would have been topical again.

Agent Dunham

Were these things jotted down on the back of a very old fag packet that got pulled out in a production meeting?

Alberon

You have to wonder what the production team think of the newer episodes. The near total drop in quality must be obvious to them.

I can't imagine they're being paid an absolutely huge amount of money to make up for it either.

Ferris

What happened to NFTs anyway? Everyone just realize they were a load of old shit?

Agent Dunham

It's like when a recording artist who had a big hit back in the 50's or 60's put out a new album (usually on a budget label) that had a naff re-recording of their moment in the limelight.
