Pauline is now having to her run her DIY stores on her own after the recent death of Lynda Baron. What are the chances of that happening eh?

That's a hill I will die on

I will also die on this hill.

One of my most cherished childhood memories was when a stage school kid fucked up on Emu's Pink Windmill when announcing a prize.  All pastel legwarmers, all projection, on cue it sprang into life and became sentient and said 'YOU'VE WON A BLACK AND WHITE COLOUR TV' before a second's reflection resulted in the most satisfying deflation of a human being I have ever witnessed.  Still gives me the mad chuckles 40 years on.

Isn't Quirke's stage school aimed at under-privileged children? Getting more people into the arts from backgrounds that wouldn't normally be able to afford it is alright by me.

BOAF was rubbish though.

I knew absolutely nothing about Pauline Quirke's background when I was a child but still found her unbearable. I couldn't work out what (apart from having a slightly amusing surname) she'd done to deserve her own programme. I hated show-offs and I still do, even though the job I went into entailed talking to them. Never interviewed her though. Thankfully.

BOAF was a show that my mum liked but I didn't. Like Bread (although she went off it when they got a new Joey Boswell). I've only seen a few episodes of it, although my girlfriend (another person with very strange cultural tastes) watches it occasionally on those strange channels that just show old programmes.

Yeah I think they are more like theatre clubs than stage schools.

Goldentony

nobody liked this piece of shit loser show, anyone who says they did is a liar and a rat and needs dealing with like a rat

Cold Meat Platter

They showed this in Guantanamo Bay. And to the prisoners.

Quirke's Quarks and Quacks! a hilarious VHS compilation of bloopers of particle physics lecturers letting off during Open University broadcasts. Reduced: 49p.

Tried to resume episode 2 of series 1 again, as there was very little on television. Gave up after 2 minutes. Dreadful. If I could fast forward through the episodes more easily and there were no ads, I might have seen how they handle the prison scenes, but as it is I think I won't be watching any more of this "comedy".

They're not full-time schools, and they don't replace proper school: they do weekend classes and other short courses. It's more like going to local ballet/dance classes or music lessons where you go for a couple of hours one evening or on Saturday morning, but they do a wider range of activities including filmmaking as well as acting and dance. More expensive than school theatre clubs (if any still exist outside the private sector) or am dram or the free programs offered by some charities, but we're not talking thousands of pounds a term.

They're still full of 'look at me, me, me!'attention seeking little shits, regardless of the funding model. Songs from 'Annie' will happen, hands will be waved in the air, trees will be impersonated.

Performers are like politicians, the desire to be one should ban you from being one.

Birds of a Feather was a horrible programme.  Which is why, when I loved Goodnight Sweetheart, I was somewhat staggered to discover that it was written by the same people.

JarrowMonkey

They were both on Shine in Harvey Moon, which from memory was written by Marks and Gran, it was also one of my favourites as a young lad

Quirke was also on Emmerdale for a while

BOAF was utter cack mind

You can't discount the Lyndhurst Factor

That's a hill I will die on (or let others do, while I egg them on from a place of safety)

What do you mean by 'stage school cunts'?

Cunts from stage school

They constantly chirp "it's a hard knock life... for us, it's a hard knock life... for us" and everything they say and do is presented through a veil of gurning and hand waving.

They believe they are the highlight of your day because of all the brilliant gurning and hand waving.  Like you can't believe how skilful they are and that you hope their talents will rub off on you.

You must surely have come across some in your long and varied life.

Proactive

Never met an actual stage school person irl but the kids who were into drama at school were the fucking worst, sorry.

kalowski

Partridge has a line in Nomad about rich stage school kids being too well fed and plump to play needy Oliver Twist types.

I've watched Rod Hull & Emu's Pink Windmill Show, yes. and it is cringeworthy, but at the end of the day though, it is just kids showing off and learning how to become West End Wendies. The delightful film Bugsy Malone (1975) must be sheer hell on earth for you.

Gervais's solo work is Basically Birds Of A Feather After Dark isn't it?

Quote from: Glebe on April 11, 2022, 09:24:17 PMMichael 'Boon' Elphick in that too, of course!

And on the subject of 'Stars of UK TV in David Lynch Films', yes, it's time once again folks to wheel out Guy 'Lt. Gruber' Siner in Lost Highway!

Looking the same bloody age as he did during the war too! Insane

He would play a great modern day Jello Biafra in a biopic

Not as bad as the ones into R.E. Mind you, I went to a Catholic school.

The Boston Crab's favourite film.
I'm not joking.

QuoteGuy 'Lt. Gruber' Siner in Lost Highway!

I watched "Leprechaun 4: In Space" and he was clearly having brilliant fun in that. More fun than I was watching it, that's for sure, but he definitely took the edge off.

I have warm memories of Birds of a feather, me and my mam and my sister would watch naff sitcoms of a night time as a family. The golden girls, bread, etc.
Yeah, it wasn't very funny, but it didn't really need to be. Just broad characters doing the things you'd expect them to do in various situations and us having a chuckle, it was good enough for us.

I'd watch the young ones and monty python and stuff by myself, I was the only one feeling those, but these sorts of shows brought us all together.

What was with the tarty older woman archetype in those old sitcoms? Dorian in this, Marina in last of the summer wine, rose in keeping up appearances, blanche in the golden girls, lilo lil in bread, etc. You don't really see it anymore.
